OUR MEETINGS

20/03/2019

note: some meetings not listed contain mostly of research, planning and modelling.

21st March 2019

Today, we were given information about the goals and aims of Go4Set. We were also given information about what happens after Go4Set and the many awards we can get after completing it.

we started by doing some team building activities because the projects will be done in teams and not individuals.

We were given four booklets, each explaining the individual tasks. We could choose from:

  • Stations of the future
  • Create sport
  • Business Of Recycling
  • Eco Factory

We then discussed each option together as a group and assessed the pros and cons of each of the projects. We then held a vote and the results concluded to a draw between "stations of the future" and "The business of recycling".

We then again at the two projects and looked at how much we could expand on the project and brainstormed some ideas aloud to each other and then we decided on "Business Of Recycling". We wanted to do this to help our community, (such as our school) and decrease the amount of litter in the are and hopefully make a profit from this and encourage others to do so!

26th March 2019

On this day, we met our leader (Ryan) from the company Grupo Antolin. Ryan showed us a short presentation about the company (where they were based, how it was started and what they do etc). Ryan talked with us to discuss what projects our group was choosing and this then led to the discussion of what Grupo Antolin does to reduce waste and recycle all of their waste, whether it be their coffee cups or their leftover materials.

29th March 2019

Today we discussed how to create the Gantt chart for our project, deciding carefully when to do certain tasks in a controlled and organised manner. This including putting away time for certain tasks like research, designing the model and organising trips to places we feel would benefit our project.

These trips included visiting Redditch train station, and then taking a train journey to Birmingham New Street to analyse the difference in how they deal with litter through surveying members of the public on their opinions.

We decided this trip should take place on Monday 1st April.

1st April 2019

During the course of today we took a trip to Redditch train station and then on to Birmingham New Street.

We left at around 9:15AM on Monday 1st April and walked to Redditch Train Station. We surveyed members of the public to ask what they thought about the facilities in Redditch Train Station and if they believed we could profit from litter.

We then caught the train to Birmingham New Street Station and did some comparative research to get an unbiased opinion on what the difference between the two stations are and which one has the cleanest environment.

After eating lunch, we then surveyed staff members in shops such as Cath Kidston and MAC and a few smaller makeup stores to see how sustainable the brands were and what they do with excess products, and if they make profits from recycling if possible.

We learned that not many of the employees were aware of the process of what happens to excess products but we got a result from a sales assistant in (arguably) the leading makeup brand, MAC. We learned that they send it off to this one site and assess whether it could be used again, emptying any contaminated makeup from the 'containers' and reuse these if in shape. We also learned that all of their cases are made from either glass, plastic or metal and so are easy to reuse and recyclable.

We then got back to school - what a great day this was!

10th April 2019

During this day, we visited the factory our mentor works in, Grupo Antolin. We took a tour around the area and we looked into how they use plastic to create different parts of a car. we also took part in the different activities they do to train. We see how they separate their rubbish into different bins.

12th April 2019

Today we presented our PowerPoint that we have created to show children in our school. we showed examples of how litter can affect different animals and us. We explained about our project and explained our solution to litter and how to improve our recycling systems. We could profit from polythene.

We decided to implement a system to make it easier for the school to recycle. We decided to do things like this:

  • Provide outdoor recycling bins where we collect polythene that we intend to sell to make profit for school.
  • implement a house scoring system so that children will be more motivated to recycle for prizes.
  • A system to collect litter during the last five minutes of our lunchtime.
